Ecuador: Shadow Report to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW)

This shadow report was prepared by Taller de Comunicación Mujer from Ecuador (Women’s Communication Workshop) and was submitted for consideration by the CEDAW Committee within the review of Ecuador's compliance with the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.

IGLHRC sponsored the translation of the report from Spanish into English and the participation of an activist representing Taller de Comunicación Mujer in the CEDAW review session in Geneva, in order to increase the capacity of the local group to present to the Committee the situation of lesbian, bisexual, transsexual, transgender and intersex women in Ecuador.

Update

In its concluding observations to the government of Ecuador, the CEDAW Committee noted the prohibition against discrimination of sexual minorities in the new constitution of Ecuador. Noting reports of continued discrimination on these grounds, the CEDAW Committee urged that that the state investigate these instances and take appropriate remedial measures.
