The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) is recruiting a highly qualified and motivated individual to fill the position of Director of Capacity Strengthening. The person in this position will lead IGLHRC’s efforts to launch an innovative, practical human rights documentation capacity-strengthening program for LGBT activists and organizations in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East. The successful candidate will provide creative vision, leadership, implementation and management regarding IGLHRC’s new strategic focus on building skills in human rights documentation in the global LGBT movement. This is a full-time position to be based in Buenos Aires, Argentina or Johannesburg, South Africa.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Works with IGLHRC regional program coordinators, local partners, and human rights documentation specialists to assess regional needs and develop annual work plans for implementing human rights documentation training, strengthening, and resource sharing.

  • Develops an organizational approach to responding to the needs of IGLHRC partners vis-à-vis human rights documentation

  • Develops and maintains relationships with global and regional organizations doing human rights documentation work and training to maximize resources available for LGBT groups and human rights defenders.

  • Develops relevant materials and curricula for human rights documentation training.

  • Works with regional staff and occasional consultants, as well as with partners themselves, to implement skills building activities.

  • Provides direct, hands-on training, when needed, as part of training teams.

  • Evaluates progress in human rights documentation capacity of IGLHRC partners in concrete, measureable ways.

  • Researches, establishes and maintains a clearinghouse for innovative and successful best practices on human rights documentation for LGBT communities.

  • Collaborates with the Development Department to secure funds for human rights documentation capacity building programming.

  • Collaborates with the Communications Department to produce material on human rights documentation for public consumption including for the IGLHRC blog, newsletter, and website.

  • Collaborate with the Director of Global Advocacy to ensure integration of IGLHRC programmatic initiatives.

  • Collaborates with the Finance Department to produce budgets and monitor spending.

  • Participate actively as a member of IGLHRC’s senior management team, representing the capacity-strengthening functions of the organization.


Knowledge, skills and attitudes required

  • Minimum of 5 years experience working either as a trainer or as a professional in the human rights documentation field.

  • Masters degree in political science, international relations, adult education, or related field.

  • Experience with multiple aspects of human rights documentation—including researching and writing human rights reports, qualitative and quantitative data collection, oral histories, event-based data gathering and analysis, video and audio story telling, etc;

  • Experience managing program staff, leading and inspiring.

  • Commitment to the on-going study of the political change, cultural norms and movement building.

  • An outstanding relationship builder, with a capacity to establish broad and diverse connections to a global community.

  • Deep knowledge of political, social, economic realities in one or more of IGLHRC’s four geographic focus zones (Africa, Latin America/Caribbean, Middle East, Asia)

  • Basic experience with monitoring and evaluation strategies for skills-building among civil society groups and leaders.

  • Excellent writing and editing skills.

  • Ability to communicate in English and at least one additional language (Arabic, French, or Spanish).

  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively.

 

This position reports to the Executive Director. Two Regional Program Officers report to this position.
